Understanding fire rated ceilings, FRL, group classifications, and passive fire protection can be overwhelming. The Australian Building Code and Fire Certification can be just as confusing, often leading to more questions than answers.
Luckily, over 3 decades of operation, we know a thing or two about compliant systems. We stock (and deliver) a lineup of products that hit the mark on safety without compromising on aesthetics or acoustic performance.
Have a question we didn’t answer here? Our experts are just a call away.
The critical role of fire rated ceiling tiles and building materials
In a fire, the primary goal is to hinder its spread, buying crucial time for evacuation and firefighting efforts. Fire-resistant materials slow down the destruction, allowing for a safer and more controlled response.
While completely fireproof ceiling tiles don’t exist, the highest-rated materials significantly inhibit the spread of intense fires and can endure severe fire exposure. This not only helps preserve the structure but also prevents the fire from extending to other parts of the building or neighbouring properties.
Group numbers: what are they?
Fire testing replicates real fire scenarios, subjecting panels to a 100kW fire for 10 minutes, followed by a 300kW fire for another 10 minutes.
The test results categorise materials into Groups 1, 2, and 3, based on the timing of flashover* occurrence. The lower the group number, the better the performance in a fire.
Group 1: No flashover point reached during the length of the test (this is the best possible rating).
Group 2: Flashover point reached between 10 and 20 minutes.
Group 3: Flashover point reached between 2 and 10 minutes.
*A flashover is the simultaneous ignition of combustible material in an enclosed area.
How to find the minimum group rating required for your project
To determine the necessary Group rating for your project, refer to the BCA Wall & Ceiling Lining Materials table in NCC Specification C1.10 Table 3.
