InsulationThe ulitmate guide to thermal and acoustic insulation

When we think insulation, we usually think of thermal first, but in essence insulation minimises energy transfer, whether heat or kinetic (soundwaves).

Both thermal and acoustic performance factors are important to consider when it comes to any fit out regardless of what industry it’s for, so how do you know which insulation is best for your project?

Below the team at Ceilings By Design have shared ours

Insulation 101: what is thermal insulation and acoustic insulation

We’re going back to basics, but it’s important to understand how each type functions so you can achieve the highest quality outcomes for your next fit out.

Both insulation types share some properties, however they are some notable differences to be aware of.

Thermal insulation reduces heat transfer and is generally used in ceiling cavities and external walls.

Acoustic insulation is denser and reduces airborne noise from entering an area.

Why optimal insulation is important

Ultimately, the purpose of both acoustic and thermal insulation is to increase the comfort for the occupants of the space.

But there are unique benefits for each, including thermal’s ability to slash costs on energy bills and acoustic insulation’s soundproofing properties for quiet areas.

How to choose the right insulation for your fit out or project

As we mentioned earlier, both types of insulation share properties, but it’s important to know they’re specialised.

For example, to achieve great heat retention or reflection, some acoustic benefits will be sacrificed.

If you’re set on having the best of both worlds, there are acoustic insulation products with sufficient thermal properties, but they come at a significantly higher cost. That’s why it’s important to consider budget and the requirements of your project.

We’ve summarised the main factors you need to assess to make the most informed decision, below.

Our top picks: insulation product recommendations

When it comes to insulation, we recommend Higgins or ECOWOOL. Both brands feature a formaldehyde free composition and performance that never disappoints.

HIGGINS

  • Thermal insulation
    • Thicknesses ranging from 75 – 150mm
    • R-value ranging from 1.5 – 3.5
  • Acoustic insulation
    • Thickness ranging from 50 – 100mm
    • R-value ranging from 0.9 – 2.4

ECOWOOL

  • Acoustic batts (can be used for thermal applications too)
    • Thickness ranging from 50 – 110mm
    • R-value ranging from 1.2 – 3.1
  • Ceiling batts (thermal)
    • Thickness ranging from 120 – 278mm
    • R-value ranging from 2.5 – 6.0
  • Wall batts (acoustic)
    • Thickness ranging from 75 –110mm
    • R-value ranging from 1.5 – 3.1

How to maximise the benefits of your insulation

Want to take things to the next level and get the most out of your products? Look for a high R-value.

Despite, R-value being a measure of thermal resistance, it’s still an important metric for acoustics too. Products with a high R-value will have a greater density and thickness, both of which are desirable for preventing sound transfer or reverberation.

If you’re opting to thermally insulate your space, we suggest ensuring you’ve got all your bases covered: walls and roofs. Save up to 65% on heating and cooling, with a well-insulated roof and walls.

For acoustic insulation, look for a high R-value for the greatest insulation properties. To really reap the benefits from your acoustic insulation, install acoustic plasterboard and ceiling tiles.

Combining insulation is also a great option when your fit out has both acoustic and thermal needs. Generally, we’d advise thermal insulation in the external walls and ceiling and install acoustic insulation for internal partition walls (or external when outside noise pollution is an issue).
