Green Star rating 101

Green Star is essentially a stamp of approval for sustainability in the building industry. Managed by the Green Building Council of Australia, it’s all about improving how our spaces are designed and built.

Here’s what it focuses on:

  • Reducing gas emissions, waste, energy, and water consumption during the production of materials, construction, and operation
  • Enhancing health and wellbeing outcomes of occupants and the community
  • Improving the resilience and longevity of buildings to reduce future repairs and subsequent waste

For any building to be Green Star rated, it must first meet 10 minimum requirements called Minimum Expectation credits. The project then requires additional credits that determine its overall Star rating.

Green Star ratings apply to various categories including the build process itself (Performance), the building’s materials (Design & As Built), the internal fit out design (Interiors), and the surrounding area’s liveability (Communities).

How to meet Green Star building requirements

There are many factors that come into play with Green Star ratings, but for purposes of keeping it as simple and as fuss-free as possible, look for products that are marked as:

  • Net-zero / low carbon
  • Recyclable / recycled
  • Described as “low emissions of VOCs” / improve air quality
  • Accompanied by an ISO14001:2015 certification
  • Stamped with a Green Star icon (the icon varies between companies but it’s usually a green leaf)

We, however, have made the decision process easy for you! We stock a wide range of products that meet Green Star building requirements from sustainability-leading companies like:
