This guide covers Studco’s complete steel stud framing portfolio, including application matching across the industries.
Ceilings By Design supplies Studco products across Australia from our Queensland and New South Wales branches. We can also assist with product selection and technical documentation for project requirements – contact our team to discuss your project today.
What is Studco’s steel stud framing system?
Studco’s steel stud framing system is a cold-formed steel framing solution used for internal wall construction and related commercial applications. The system includes studs, tracks, and supporting components designed to create durable wall frames for commercial buildings. Studco is an all-Australian brand: owned, designed, and manufactured in Australia and tested to relevant Australian standards.
Studco holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification and its systems are National Construction Code compliant.
For specification work, the important point is not just the stud itself, but the full wall assembly. Studco provides technical resources and product documentation to support design, engineering, and compliance review.
Studco stud and track specifications
Studco’s steel stud framing is available in multiple widths, lengths, and material gauges, allowing the system to be matched to different wall types and performance needs. Rather than relying on a single standard profile, the range is intended to support a variety of commercial construction applications.
Each width is available in multiple base metal thicknesses (BMT). BMT is the gauge of the steel before any coating is applied, and it is one of the most critical specification variables because it directly affects structural capacity, maximum unrestrained height, and acoustic performance.
When selecting a stud specification, both width and gauge need to be confirmed together. Taller walls, heavier linings, and more demanding structural conditions generally require a more robust stud selection than a standard internal partition.
Studco stud and track framing range
Studco’s wall framing range includes standard steel stud and track systems, acoustic stud options, deflection head track solutions, bottom track, and related wall-system components such as brackets, clips, shaftwall, and lightweight panel wall systems. The range is designed to support everything from standard commercial partitions to more demanding acoustic, movement, and multi-storey applications.
Steel Stud
The core of the range. Studco’s lipped steel studs are available in widths from 64mm to 150mm, in multiple lengths, and in gauges from 0.50 BMT to 1.15 BMT. Width and BMT need to be confirmed together; they determine maximum unrestrained height, structural capacity, and acoustic performance. Taller walls, heavier linings, and more demanding structural or acoustic conditions all push toward a heavier gauge selection.
Acoustic Stud (Resilwall)
Where a standard stud profile isn’t sufficient to achieve the required Rw, Studco’s Resilwall® acoustic stud provides a purpose-engineered solution. It’s suited to walls with sensitive acoustic requirements, typically high-separation partitions, tenancy boundaries, or specialist spaces where the wall assembly needs to do significant acoustic work.
Deflection Head Track
Used where walls need to accommodate vertical deflection from the floor above. Standard in multi-storey commercial construction, where interstory drift and slab movement need to be managed without transferring load into the partition.
RapidTrack Slotted Deflection Track
For applications requiring lateral deflection accommodation, typically walls subject to heavy loading or high wind-induced movement. The slotted profile allows controlled movement without compromising the integrity of the wall assembly.
Vortex Segmented Rebate Track
Part of the Vortex High Performance Framing System, Studco’s patented solution to internal wall creaking in tall buildings. The segmented rebate track works with the Vortex isolation clip system to decouple the stud from the track, eliminating the friction-based noise that standard stud-and-track framing generates under building movement. If you’re specifying partitions in a high-rise and creaking is a known risk on the project, this is worth including in your documentation.
Bottom Track
Studco’s bottom track includes a safety hem for increased rigidity. Matched to the stud width and specified alongside the head track for the complete wall assembly.
Noggings and Nogging Track
Noggings are horizontal bracing members that prevent stud rotation during installation and under load. Nogging track is available in 3600mm lengths with 300mm, 450mm, or 600mm stud centres pre-marked. Both are straightforward specification items that are often overlooked until they affect the installation programme.
HEDA Jamb Stud
A purpose-built jamb stud for internal and external wall openings. The HEDA® system simplifies the framing of door and window openings, with connectors designed to transfer loads cleanly without requiring additional timber or custom fabrication. Available in widths to match the stud range.
EzyTrack Curved Wall Track
A flexible track profile for curved walls and bulkheads. Where architectural geometry requires a non-linear framing solution, EzyTrack handles it without the time and waste associated with cutting and notching standard track.
How to select a system
The right Studco framing system depends on the project’s functional requirements. Wall height, lining type, acoustic target, fire requirement, and movement allowances all affect the final specification.
A simple selection process is:
- Confirm the wall height and whether any sections are unusually tall.
- Identify whether the wall needs acoustic performance beyond a standard partition.
- Check whether an FRL is required.
- Confirm whether deflection accommodation is needed at the head track.
- Match the stud, track, and lining system to the project’s technical documentation.
Acoustic performance: tested assemblies and RW Ratings
Acoustic performance is driven by the full wall assembly, not the stud alone. Lining layers, insulation, and separation details all contribute to the final Rw. Studco provides tested assemblies with verified Rw ratings for use in compliance documentation. Where a standard stud assembly is insufficient, the Resilwall acoustic stud or a Vortex isolation detail are the options to consider.
Ceilings By Design also supplies insulation and acoustic wall treatments to support a complete assembly specification from a single supplier.
Fire rating: FRL performance and tested assemblies
FRL requirements apply across a broad range of commercial wall types: separating walls, fire-rated corridors, stairwell enclosures, and tenancy boundaries in Class 5, 6, and 9 buildings. Studco’s framing systems are available in fire-rated configurations tested to Australian standards. The compliance outcome depends on the complete assembly, so the lining type, fixing method, insulation, penetration detailing, and construction methodology all need to align with the nominated Studco tested assembly. Ceilings By Design can confirm the appropriate assembly and supply the documentation your certifier needs.
Studco steel stud framing is suitable for all project types
Studco steel stud framing is suitable for a broad range of commercial applications, including office partitions, fit outs, shaftwall applications, and other internal wall systems. It is also presented as part of a wider building systems offer that supports designers and installers across multiple project types.
For fit-out work, the main advantage is flexibility: the system can be adapted to different wall heights, acoustic needs, and compliance requirements. For larger commercial or mixed-use projects, the benefit is having a supported system with technical documentation and product range depth.
Refurbishment projects often need the widest range of options because existing building conditions can vary from one area to another. In those cases, a supplier that can provide both product and technical backup is especially useful.
Specifying Studco through Ceilings By Design
Ceilings By Design supplies the full Studco range across Australia. We stock every stud width from 51mm to 150mm, every available length, and every gauge. Our stockholdings are significantly larger than most competitors, which means we can support fast-turnaround projects and complex builds without supply delays.
Unlike suppliers who carry only the most common sizes, our full-range stock means you can source a complete project from a single supplier, regardless of the mix of stud sizes your project requires.
